Waking up to a frozen canal, we realised how lucky we had been to get through the previous locks the day before. They were due to close for maintenance that morning, so we could have been delayed by a few weeks if we had missed this deadline.

Some worrying scraping sounds as the boat moved slightly against the ice encouraged us to dislodge the closest sections using a boat hook.

A sunny morning failed to melt the ice. In fact, the canal remained frozen for the rest of the week. The sun did entice us out for a walk to a lovely canal side cafe, Annie’s Tea Room just along the canal.
