Mission 34 – Down the Napton locks

February – Oxford Canal

Returning to our boat at the end of a working day is always a privilege but this was an especially welcome site. Canals, trees and the towpath are often photogenic but it’s nice when a good sunset adds to the drama.

Our journey the next day involved 9 locks and about 12 miles taking us almost to the top of the South Oxford canal. The weather was kind and we even had time to buy a new chimney before coming home for a few days.

Thanks to Midland Chandlers

The last seven locks clustered together in a flight. It’s always quicker when the locks are closer together as one of us can walk ahead to set the next lock while the boat descends in the current lock.

This flight brought us down from a very scenic summit level at Claydon, into the village of Napton, nestled at foot of the locks.
