What’s round the bend is often the thing we expected, but sometimes it is something completely different. A useful life skill is to identify the good bits that are almost always embedded within even the least promising of unexpected surprises.

We can never quite see what’s round the bend until we make the turn …

The fabled “silver lining” can have a powerful impact if we can find it. The extensively documented medical evidence of the placebo effect illustrates the importance of our psychological approach to “whatever life throws at us”. This is not to suggest an unrealistically positive outlook, rather that we should pick out and focuss on the genuine advantages of any given situation (however trivial they may seem).
